Line tapers

Here's a very nice and useful scheme of tapers as made by different line brands.

This scheme shows which lines are more suitable for short line fishing for close in work in smaller streams and which are more suitable for fishing with delicate dry flies and small nymphs.

The lines for close in work also work better for fishing with weighted nymphs because of the faster build up of taper to turn over more aggressively.

The news on the RISE - Fly Fishing Film Festival is out.

Most fly fishing clubs in the 50 km area from Rotterdam got the announcement as well.

In the three fly shops in the Rotterdam area (Martin Hengelsport, Kok Hengelsport and Rothfusz Hengelsport) an announcement poster of the event is hanging on their wall.

Now the largest Dutch fishing magazine Beet got the news on their website's front page.

A real look at the new Hardy St. George

I had the chance to take a look at the new St. George reels by Hardy today. What a nice reel! The Spitfire version isn't polished steel-like as I imagined from the pictures but more of a champagne color. Both the black and the Spitfire version had a slight powdered finished on it rather than simply smooth anodized or painted.

The finish is just... perfect? I love the ivorine handle by the way. At around $750 a piece these reels are really for the connoisseur or collectors. However they are excellent fishing reels. On a bamboo fly rod, the 3 inch version is just the right size for a 4-5 weight rod.

I was interested whether the spare spools of the new batch would fit the re-issue reel form the 1990's. Unfortunately I didn't bring along my 1990's reel. The price of the spare spools blow me away a little. Around $250 this ain't peanuts...

Here! (well, almost...)

Remember the posting about filming and fishing at the same time? Innovations are going so fast, I think we're (almost) here!

Taking pictures of fishing trips is great fun. It helps you capture the fine moments together with a friend or just being out in the outdoors. However capturing some moments with a video camera can give that extra touch to the moment.

I too have been experimenting this area using a (relatively) cheap pocket video camera, the Creative Vado HD. This camera has been around for a few years and it's still a nice little camera. It's light, it captures HD (720p) at 30 fps (frames per second), it has a good wide angle lens and it is easy to use.

These days more and more pocket camera's are coming out with better specs (real 1080p HD) and 60 fps (only 720p) recording for even more fluid capture of fast movements and some models are even water proof.

I have taken care of shaking as well as capturing myself when I'm on my own by using a tripod and it has been working out pretty well. But how about capturing the moment of a fish taking my dry fly off the surface or how the strike indicator moves ever so gently? This 'capturing the same view as I see myself' type of filming is something I haven't been able to solve.

The weird idea of hooking a small webcam-like camera on top of the hat as seen in my posting is obviously more of a joke rather than reality. Well, is it? Take a look at current offerings like the HD recording Contour or even smaller the GoPro.

These 'wearable' video camera's are really nifty, but they acquire a hard case helmet to mount the camera. Obviously that's no option when fly fishing. Way too hot! But then I ran into this little gadget: the Looxcie.

This wearable video camera reminds me of the LED lamp I wrote about earlier. The Looxcie has no buttons. It just starts recording and when the storage is full it just replaces the earliest recordings. Storage capacity is supposed to be 5 hours of recording! The video resolution is 480 x 320, recoding at 15 fps. There is no HD version planned yet. It's also a Bluetooth head set for your cell phone. When a call comes in, the video stops recording.

Well, I'm sure this type of innovation will continue to evolve. This Looxcie is the closest video camera I've seen so far that fits my idea of 'film what you see'. In next couple of years I hope to see a Looxcie-sized video camera with 1080p HD, 60fps, wide angle lens with image stabilization, 9 hours battery life, 16Gb of storage and stereo sound. Can't be that much to ask?

Again, we've come a long way.
What I think should improve to become a serious contender as the fly fisherman's video camera are:

* Some form of image stabilization

* Better quality with lower light conditions

Update 18 june 2011:
Here's a nice article about the GoPro Hero HD camera from a fly fisherman's perspective.

This video and especially the conclusions by the owner are spot on. Although the captures are easily the best I've seen so far (without any form of image stabilization it's still a shaky view though) from a first person's view, it's still not what the owner (me too!) is looking for. Also the terrible user interface (in fact there is no user interface...) makes difficult to see what you're capturing.


Update 7 aug 2011:
It looks like the GoPro is really catching on as the can-take-a-hit video camera for fly fishermen. Thanks to the head strap the GoPro can capture in a true first person view. Unfortunately the extreme wide angle lens can result in captures with weird effects like this screen shot shows of a rod bending in two different curves.

iPhone 4's camera

Got the new iPhone 4 a few weeks ago. This thing is such a big improvement in speed over my previous iPhone 3G. This new screen (Apple calls it Retina Display) and the resolution is so good, the text on the screen looks like it's printed on a magazine.

Besides being a brilliant smart phone (it's actually a small computer!), I'm pretty amazed by the new improved camera of the iPhone 4. It's a decent 5 mega pixels. As usual the phone camera's aren't good with fast paced situations, but for still pictures it's very good. I've never seen pictures like this taken with a phone so far.

The 'tap to focus' feature is ridiculously easy to use. Just tap the part on the picture you want the camera to focus and the iPhone's internal camera software does exactly as it says. Easy as that!

This also works with the HD (720p) video mode as well. Take a look at this short video I shot (watch it in 720p HD mode for the best result. The original crispness of the video gets lost slightly on YouTube or Vimeo). It's a bit shaky since it's shot just out of my hands but it sure shows what this little bugger is capable of. This 'selective focus' is pretty amazing since the iPhone's camera has a fixed lens.



The iPhone doesn't have an option to attach the phone to a tripod, so I need to figure out how to keep the phone still to avoid shaking while filming. I'm sure some manufacturer will come up with a little cradle to attach the iPhone to a regular tripod.

Update:
There are (obviously) several tripod adapters for the iPhone for sale. I've found one at eBay for around $7 including shipping!


I've been fumbling around with the camera for a while and it sure has made taking picture with the iPhone a lot more fun. I doubt I'll be leaving my regular camera at home when fishing but if it does happens that I left my camera at home or the hotel, the iPhone will be ready.

RISE Fly Fishing Film Festival is coming to The Netherlands!

Gin-Clear Media is a New Zealand based company that specializes in producing cinema quality, adventure-driven fly fishing movies. They are the creators of the amazing Source series: New Zealand, Tasmania and their most recent destination Iceland.

The Search - Tahiti

I bought this quite some time ago. This is DVD is about a bunch of guys taking a ride on a freighter ship to reach the remote area of French Polynesia in search of big bonefish.

Not you regular DVD on how-to and where-to, but more of a video diary about their epic trip. And boy do they catch some nice big bonefish!

Later I found out this DVD was produced by Gin-Clear Media. Take a look at the next posting about the great venue we're planning for early December in Rotterdam!

2010 - a wasted fishing year

It's official. 2010 will be marked as my wasted fishing year.

This saturday I went for one more fishing outing this fall. The weather conditions looked pretty good. Sunny, warm (around 24 degrees Celcius, 75 Fahrenheit) and just plain nice. The previous days were a bit cloudy but they were okay.

I was really looking forward to fish the stretch of the Kyll I fished so many years in the past. Days of 100+ fish a day of graylings and rainbows were etched in my memories.

I know these days are over since the fish kills by the cormorants as well as bad fishing management. So I was curious what was left over of this great little river. I haven't fished this stretch of the river for at least 15 years.

After a 3.5 hour drive I arrived next to the river Kyll in the Eifel area and I saw a dark reflection. Well, it was pretty early in the morning so probably just low light? Guess again, yesterday they got rain in the area... The Kyll (and all rivers in the Eifel area) is known to by effected by rain really fast. It takes 2-3 days to really clear up.

This year has been pretty unfortunate for me concerning the weather when fishing. Every single day I fished was effected either by rain the same day or the previous days. Am I the only one who has been unfortunate with the weather this year?

Here's a short movie I edited from the few shots I took of the trip. I wasn't sure I took enough shots to even consider making a movie out of it.

Carrying around a tripod is pretty awkward since I want to 'travel light'. But using a tripod does result in a very steady shot. And with a tripod, I finally get to be in a scene as well!

Well, we'll try it again next year. Hopefully the weather will be much better.

Not so great weather so far...

Since when did planning a fishing trip in the midst of summer become gambling? I made two short fishing trips this late spring and mid summer and both trips had to be closed down after one measly fishing day due to rain... And I mean a lot of rain!

We did have once nice day on a high mountain stream in the Austrian alps. This nice little stream is a gem in terms of scenery, solitude and size. Just take a look at the picture and tell me it's not heaven on earth? The fish weren't large nor in huge numbers. But fishing a light 3 weight rod and a little weighted nymph or a dry fly was all we needed to have a lot of fun.

However it wasn't meant to be heaven for more than one day. The following evening the rain clouds gathered just above our heads and the tap was opened. Nothing more than gushing brown water the next morning. And yes I was mourning because it was the second time in no more than 3 weeks before I had a similar situation.

Well, we'll try it again sometime around end of september or next spring.


Until then we have to have some fun behind the vice maybe? Here's a bunch of Blue Sardines I tied for a friend of mine.

The iPad has landed

So here it is: the launch of Apple's iPad. It's really funny how much media coverage Apple products get. When ever does HP or Dell get such a news coverage on anything? Apple's marketing machine is just brilliant. I doubt any other product, be it a car or a rocket going to the other side of the universe, gets folks this excited...

The past couple of hours the sites of CNN, USAToday, CNet, computer related sites, they all are covering the launch of the iPad. The first reviews and initial impressions are written and they are pretty positive about the iPad. Especially the speed and screen seems to be amazing.

We don't know when the iPad will be launched here in The Netherlands. The larger European countries like Germany, France and England will be seeing the iPad by the end of this month.

So, this is day one of the iPad. Lets see how many days before 1 million units gets sold. It took Apple 74 days to sell its first million units of the original iPhone. Let's also see how the world is changing because of this product. We saw what happened to the mobile phone industry since the iPhone was launched.

Update 27 April 2010:
According to this site it seems more than 1 million iPads have been sold today. That's in less than one month.

Update 31 May 2010:
Apple states today that it has sold 2 million iPads in 60 (sixty!) days. Looks like the iPad is selling like hot cakes.

Update 1 June 2010:
A friend of mine got one and I must say it's a very neat gadget. Well because it's so useful and handy it's almost a mistake to call it a gadget. Just sitting on the couch and checking your favorite sites? Just check that email and answering a few. You just keep grabbing it. So many new iPad apps appearing every day, it's no wonder it's selling like hot cakes. And yes the screen is gorgeous!

Camera tips

If you're serious about your fishing trips, you'll probably want to take some nice pictures. You don't need a SLR to take great pictures. But if you are humongously serious about your fishing pictures you'll probably (want to) get one of those digital SLR cameras.

Re-re-issue of the Hardy St George

Hardy is going retro. In 2008 they relaunched the good old Perfect reel. Now Hardy is running a new re-issue of the St George reel. The last time Hardy did this was in the mid 1990's.

As much as I love the Perfect, I think the St George reel looks absolutely stunning on a bamboo rod. The classic ported spool and the agate line guide makes this one handsome reel.

Hardy decided to make the two trout models (the 2 9/16 inch Junior and the 3 inch version) both in black as well as the stunning Spitfire version. These reels are also available in two versions: right hand winding or left hand winding. The 3 inch size will fit just perfect any 4 to 5 weight rod, both bamboo, glass or graphite rod.

At $750 this reel is no cheap reel but I'm sure it will keep its value for just about ever (especially the LHW version) and it will be in service for generations.

I think the Spitfire version just looks magical. Where is Santa when you need 'em?...

iPhone - the fashion model

Apple products often model in a TV or magazine ad. Dozens of movie appearance of the original multi color iMacs, the white iMacs and now the new brushed aluminum iMacs makes Apple products the runway models of the computer industry.

The slim silvery MacBook Pro is often used to emphasize the high quality or high fashion statement of the product in the ad. Now it looks like the iPhone has started it's own career as a high fashion runway model. Here's a snap from the new 2010 Winston catalog.

The Winston Rod Company recently launched it's new website. Looks very high tech. I would have liked Winston rather keeping in touch with it's long history of rod making with a more classic appearance.

Winston has one thing that distinguishes from all other major rod companies and that's it's heritage. It all began in depression years of 1929 where Robert Winther and Lew Stoner started their Winston Rod Company. I think a company with such a heritage should always use their long history as the foundation or their marketing.

App store - Apple's money maker

It has only been a few years ago Apple introduced the iPhone.

Since then the iPhone has reshaped the landscape of smart phones. All, I mean all, phone manufacturers are trying to imitate the (success of the) iPhone. Be it the looks, the touch screen, the icons, the user interface or the web browsing experience, they all want to make their phone look and behave like the iPhone.

Besides the iPhone being a totally radical new experience, it's the App store that is making a killing. The App store is a brilliant step Apple made which totally upsets everyone in the phone business.

There are more than one hundred thousand apps in the App store and it's growing every minute. And it's a huge money maker for Apple that's simply mind boggling! More than 2.5 billion downloads since it's launched just about 2 years ago (The App store was launch shortly after the iPhone itself)! The world has never seen this kind of growth.

DIY dubbing block

Richard Strolis showed us earlier one of his nice bead head caddis pupae pattern.

This time Richard shows us how to make a dubbing block using very simple materials. He made his for less than $5. This video shows us that it doesn't have to look fancy to make your own dubbing rake. Thanks Richard!

Warming-up

It's cold outside. Not really weather condition to do anything concerning a fly rod. But it's time to tie some flies and dream about those warm sunny days with gin clear water running through your fingers...

Here's a nice video to warm up. Really fat cutthroats rising to dry flies in the Elk river valley in British Columbia , Canada. I've fished the Elk river in the past. Very pretty river! Those smaller streams like the Wigwam river is the one I'll be looking for next time. Those cutts are just gorgeous!

The last frontier?

I know, I know... These video clips are easy postings, but I just keep running into great videos!

Here's a new video coming up on trout fishing in Kamchatka Peninsula. These guys float and fish rivers which have never seen people, fishermen and fish that has never seen a fly. Virgin (big!) trout country. Probably the last part on earth.

Check out the scene (around 3:10) with the trout chasing the mouse on the surface. Man, we don't see that kind of behavior out here?!

Update 18 June 2011:
I watched the DVD.

Hmm... not exactly what I expected or hoped for. Lots of talking by the members of the group that made the journey together. Yes, Kamchatka is the what Alaska probably looked like 100 years ago: very remote and untouched.

What I hoped was to see how amazing the fishing is in Kamchatka, the diversity of the wild life, the amazing numbers of free flowing rivers and streams and just plain untouched wilderness. The DVD is in my humble opinion too much of a "We had a great time on the trip" movie. Sorry if I step on a few toes here.

We need ESPN here!

Caddis Pupa

I fish a lot with the basic bead head caddis pupa. This pattern is ultra easy to tie and is made out of very common materials.

I like to fish near dangerous spots: tight under under hanging tree branches, fallen logs, against the (undercut) banks, etc. Obviously I loose a couple of flies every day fishing this way so I need patterns that can be tied fast.

A twist of this pattern is this Magic Caddis by Richard Strolis. Here's a nice and very clear instruction video. I'm tying half a dozen of this nymph for next time.
